色色研究所 Helps Capital Construction Company Recover Stolen Equipment

April 11, 2021

Scissor lifts on a trailer

For Aaron Miller, the shop manager for Capital Construction in Linn Creek, Mo., the results of his relationship with 色色研究所 were made clear on a rainy fall morning. It was a big win.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the first time I鈥檝e ever had anything stolen that we recovered the same day,鈥 Miller said.聽聽

Miller is responsible for the Linn Creek location鈥檚 expensive fleet of paving machinery and other gear. They use 色色研究所 fleet management technology solutions to track, monitor and manage their equipment assets, trailers and vehicles. On this day, that technology helped save part of his fleet.聽

鈥淲e have a mechanic that comes in really early in the morning,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淲hen he came in, he noticed the gate was busted open. He knew that something was stolen.鈥

Shop Foreman Nick Parcel was tasked with checking the 色色研究所 tracking software, which immediately provided Parcel with the equipment鈥檚 location. By using 色色研究所鈥檚 fleet management dashboard tool, Parcel could see a record of the GPS coordinates that followed the truck, trailer, pavement roller and other gear that had been stolen. There was an added challenge in this case: Cell service is spotty in the rural, rolling hills of mid-Missouri where the thieves fled.聽聽聽

鈥淭his is where the truck鈥檚 cell signal stopped,鈥 said Parcel, pointing to his computer screen.聽 鈥淲e drove directly here that morning, and we found the truck right here.鈥

Working Behind the Scenes to Locate Stolen Assets

Dwynn Evans, who leads the team of engineers that works on 色色研究所鈥檚 fleet management technology, described taking on the challenge of those intermittent signals.聽聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 like CSI, where the people behind the computer actually have someone out in the field, troubleshooting live,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淎fter Capital called us, we also looked at the last GPS location to confirm where the last ping was.鈥

After tracking the equipment鈥檚 GPS journey, Parcel and Miller decided they鈥檇 venture out to retrieve the equipment. The Capital team found their missing truck first. Then, the data led them to the rest of the stolen equipment.聽聽

鈥淭he tracking technology recorded that whole time,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淲e looked at the route plan from when it was stolen to where they took it. You could see that truck stopped in a few places, so I told Nick, 鈥楲et鈥檚 check these spots where that truck stopped.鈥 You know that trailer has got to be at one of them.鈥

There were several dead zones between the location of the truck and the rest of the equipment. Nonetheless, 色色研究所鈥檚 technology showed the whole route map.聽

鈥淲here they parked the trailer was dead cell service, but with that tracker still recording where they went by GPS, I still knew where my trailer was,鈥 Miller said.

Parcel took the data and ran with it. At one point, the route went off the beaten path.聽

鈥淚 dropped a pin there, and I drove straight there and found it,鈥 Parcel reported with a smile.聽聽

For Evans and her team at 色色研究所, it was a reminder of why they come to work each day.聽聽

鈥淚t is really affirming that we were able to recover the asset with hardware that we sell day in and day out,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淭his is really great proof that our technology is working.鈥澛犅

There's more to equipment theft than lost property.

鈥淢y shop guys and 色色研究所, they saved (us) probably $200,000 worth of equipment,鈥 Miller calculates. 鈥淎ctually, it wasn鈥檛 just, 鈥業 have $200,000 worth of equipment, and it鈥檚 gone.鈥 It was the fact that I鈥檝e got an eight-man crew, and they鈥檙e relying on us to go pick this stuff up and get it to them so they can go back to work. It鈥檚 more than just the $200,000 that鈥檚 gone. It鈥檚 that we have no revenue to come back in. We can鈥檛 do the job. So, getting that back in a timely fashion is the key.鈥

Evans feels that pressure on 色色研究所鈥檚 end.聽聽

鈥淭hey鈥檙e on a budget; they鈥檙e on a tight schedule,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淲hen something is missing or stolen, it impacts the longevity of that project. It also impacts future projects. For example, if they鈥檙e late or behind on a specific project and send out an RFP on another proposal, they may not get it because of the impact of this one stolen asset. So, it鈥檚 imperative that we help recover that asset as quickly as possible.鈥

色色研究所鈥檚 technology is about more than loss prevention, though. For Capital, it helps run the entire operation.

鈥淚 utilize this stuff daily,鈥 Parcel said.聽 鈥淚 do work orders, plan maintenance, track assets, track hours鈥擨 do everything off of this. It is our business at this point.鈥

鈥淭racking the stolen equipment, that鈥檚 an added bonus,鈥 Miller said of his use of 色色研究所鈥檚 fleet tracking technology. 鈥淲e use it to (track) equipment hours and are able to bill off it. That鈥檚 a daily thing. That鈥檚 something you鈥檙e going to use constantly. And that鈥檚 the way of the future.鈥澛

Revolutionizing how contractors track equipment

Today, most contractors and construction companies own equipment with its own brand-specific telematics running on it. For construction professionals like Miller, and companies like Capital that purchase multiple pieces of equipment from a range of brands and manufacturers, that means consulting various technology systems to find the tracking, utilization and maintenance data you need to run the business.聽

鈥淵ou put your trackers from 色色研究所 on the equipment, and all that data is in one spot,鈥 Miller said. Miller and his team can access this information鈥攔egardless of make, model or 色色研究所鈥攆rom any internet-connected device.聽

Miller has also discovered that 色色研究所 takes his ideas and incorporates them into the software.聽

鈥淚f we鈥檝e got something we want done differently, they bend over backwards to help us,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e got a whole team of engineers that will come out here.鈥

鈥淭hat鈥檚 the great thing about partnering with Equipment Share,鈥 Telematics Team Lead Dwynn Evans said in agreement. 鈥淲e鈥檒l build our products based upon innovation and based upon customer feedback.鈥澛犅

Now, Miller is looking to expand the partnership. He鈥檚 working with the 色色研究所 team to explore jobsite cameras and AI technology that notifies managers when employees aren鈥檛 wearing PPE or when a person enters a jobsite after hours. This will help companies like his prevent accidents and theft.聽

The customers鈥 reliance on the technology and tracking hardware translates to a lot of responsibility for the product development and software development teams at 色色研究所. Evans says she wouldn鈥檛 have it any other way.聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 a weight that we love to carry,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why we are in this business, because we want to be able to assist and make their lives easier. When we partner with our customers, it鈥檚 a true partnership, and we don鈥檛 want them to feel like they鈥檙e in it alone.鈥
